Individual Note: Tim Harrod had a distinguished career in the British Army. He served with the +
West Yorkshire Regiment in Palestine, Egypt, Iraq and Cyprus. After Cyprus the +
regiment was sent to the Western desert. On 28th May 1942 his platoon defended +
a position overlooking the coast road to the west of Tobruk. The following is +
an extract form his obituary:
"thirty German tanks attacked the position which had only one gun, a 75mm without +
sights, but this weapon kept in action until the end and accounted for four enemy +
tanks. The position was overrun. The Germans failed to correctly clear the objective +
and Tim Harrod and eleven survivors from his platoon lay motionless within earshot +
of the Germans for 12 hours before they could withdraw under cover of darkness. +
16 of his men were killed or missing and for his gallant conduct in ths action,+
Harrod, who was amongst those severely wounded was awarded the Military Cross."
